The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago first organized Money Smart Week in 2002, as a coordinated effort to promote personal financial literacy. AWARE participated in the fifth annual Money Smart Week in Chicago, which took place May 1-6, 2006.
AWARE was one of more than 150 organizations – including community groups, financial institutions, businesses, schools, libraries, local and national government agencies and financial experts – who presented classes and other educational activities to promote financial literacy. The week's events featured sessions on a number of topics, including budgeting, balancing a checkbook, reading a credit report, protecting against identity theft, investing, buying a home, and financing a car. In support of Money Smart Week, ten buildings in Chicago’s skyline lit their exteriors green to commemorate the week.
AWARE sponsored two workshops with Bethel New Life and GMAC, titled “The Keys to Vehicle Financing,” providing education on the auto financing process to mostly first-time car buyers. AWARE also participated in the Bi-lingual Money Smart Fair, organized by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, at the offices of the State of Illinois. In addition, AWARE provided our materials and other resources to Wright College, LaSalle Bank and Great Lakes Credit Union, for distribution during various auto financing events they held during the week.
